A sweeping swath
Of palest pink
Lies below
And above
The blue of
Early morning-
One glance out
Of the window
And I am once again
Five years old
Giggling out loud
At the simple mystery
Of the sunrise
That each morning
Is both changeless
And ever-changing
Tag: nature
Feathery Flock
Gray clouds soared
Across the sky
Like a flock of birds
Their feathery wings
Perfectly spaced
Providing each
An opportunity
For brief rest
While taking in
Blue ocean waves
Rising and falling below-
If not for the airy
Space in between
Those same clouds
May have appeared
The menacing type-
But, oh my!
How working
In Harmony
With the wind
Gave reason for
Imaginations to soar
Right alongside
Like a flock of birds
Their feathery wings
Perfectly spaced
Morning’s Shadows
I took a step
Into the cold
Where heavy
Shadows held
The quiet morning
In stillness-
One more step
And the motion
Of sunbeams
Began to light
The tiptop
Of the day-
A few more steps
Morning’s shadows
Were left behind
As affectionate
Sunlight reached
The ground below
And I walked
Into the day
Thankful for
The Love that
Creates the shade
While pushing
The darkness away
Lessons in Unity
Colors fly past
My periphery
Golden browns
And burnt oranges
Sewn together
With threads of
Yellow and green
A heavy quilt
Covering the cold
Winter ground-
Tiny feathered creatures
Rest within the soft
Patchwork
Until ready
To announce
Their presence
Rising and falling
A mesmerizing
Magic carpet
Murmuration
All moving
Together as one
Today
Their pull was strong
Each equally vying
For my attention
Each equally charming
In their schemes
I smiled
A giddy smile
Looked to the right
Looked to the left
Again and again
Unable to choose
The rising of the sun
Or the setting of the moon-
Both displayed
Varying shades
Of similar colors
Both held their purpose
Though one not
So different from the other-
Looking straight ahead
The message quietly
Fell across my heart-
Remember sweetly, without remaining in the past
Look forward without missing the hope in today
Not a Thief
Colors fading
Frail frame
Shivers
Awaiting
Winter’s coat
Yet, in the light
Of the morning sun
Beauty shines
Unmistakable
In a life well-lived
Grace on display-
Perhaps time
Is not a thief
Afterall
And instead
Brings us
To a place
Of inspiration
Able to set
A wise example
For those afraid
Of what’s to come-
Reassurance
Revealed
In the wisdom
Of so many seasons
Come and gone
Enough Time
Sometimes
Autumn leaves
Fall quickly
In an unexpected
Whirlwind
Causing whiplash
Not enough time
To sit underneath
Their wise shelter
No time to say
Farewell
Sometimes
Gentle rains
Arrive late
And the colors
Of Autumn are
Slow to change
Lovely leaves
Hold on just
A bit longer
An extended farewell
Still not enough time
There is never
Enough time
When it comes to
Goodbyes

Driving Home
Parallel lines
Well-planned grids
Built to intersect
And connect
It all sounds
So logical
Like tracing
A map with
My finger
While my eyes
Follow along-
But one glance
In any direction
And all of the
Straight-line logic
Melts into a sphere
And I am surrounded
By earth and sky
Peace and hope
Past, present, and future
How is it possible?
Sensing the vastness
Of this universe
While driving down
The highway-
I don’t know how
But it happened to me
On a Tuesday
Question Marks
I was afraid
I might not
Get to see you
This year
And I so enjoy
Our visits
Brief as they are-
There is always
A question mark
Especially when
The weather has not
Been cooperative, but
There must have been
Just enough sunshine
These past few days
To spur you on
Because when I
Rounded the corner
Yesterday
There you stood
Waving
Surprise! Here I am!
Smiling, I replied
It’s so good to see you!

How About You?
Certain seasons
Seem to turn
My World
Upside Down-
When Red Clay
Soaks its dye
Into the roots
Of a Great Oak
Transforming its crown
From green to
A vibrant shade
Of burnt orange
Right before
Leaf by leaf
The crown falls
To the ground
Afraid, yet willing
Sad, yet grateful
For purpose fulfilled-
Certain seasons
Seem to turn
My World
Upside Down-
Driving across Oklahoma, the red clay dirt catches my attention. During Fall, it creates a beautiful foundation for the changing colors.
The changing seasons remind me of personal changes. New job, sweet granddaughter, the loss of my Dad. What changes have impacted your life this year?
